The enchanting and majestic Villa Mandragone dates back to the 16th Century and is the largest of the historical Ville Tuscolane of Frascati in the Roman Castles area. Its construction began in 1573 by Cardinal Marco Sittico Altemps to serve as the summer residence of Pope Gregorio XIII. The Villa underwent its peak expansion between the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque period thanks to the participation of famous architects such as Martino Longhi il Vecchio and il Vasanzio.
Built on the remains of a Roman villa belonging to the Consul's family Quintili, the Villa owes its name "Mandragone" (Mon Dragon) to the winged dragon, heraldic symbol of the Bongompagni family (direct lineage of Pope Gregorio XIII, great friend and protector of Cardinal Altemps). The symbol was used as a decoration and was part of a number of historial events such as the signing of the bull Inter gravissimas by Pope Gregorio XIII in 1582 reforming the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar in use today.
